Amboseli National park

2 days / 1 night

Overview

Located about a four-hours drive 210 km southeast of Nairobi, Amboseli National Park is well known for its herds of big tusked elephants. A scenic park in its own right, Amboseli is synonymous with two particular things – majestic herds of elephant and glorious views of Mount Kilimanjaro in neighboring Tanzania. Kenya’s second most popular national park after the Masai Mara National Reserve, Amboseli was declared a UNESCO-Mab Biosphere Reserve in 1991.During heavy rains, the basin at the centre of the park floods, attracting hordes of wildlife. The reserve is an excellent place to view the Big Five, as well as lesser known and rarer wildlife species.

Best time to visit: Wildlife viewing is at its finest in the dry season, when animals can easily be seen around water sources. The best months are from June to September, although it is possible to visit Nairobi National Park any time. Wildlife watching is usually more difficult during the long rains (March to May) and the short rains (November to December). During these months, rainfall might restrict game drives and the grass tends to be very tall.

Wildlife to see: There are animals that include buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, baboon, zebra, wildebeest, cheetah and 100 mammal species. There are also 400 migratory and endemic bird species.

Nairobi - Amboseli
Depart Nairobi at 7am after a delightful breakfast and drive south across the Athi Plains, home of the Masai and on to Amboseli. Amboseli is renowned for its large herds of free-ranging African elephants as well as huge herds of wildebeests and many other animals including giraffes, African lions, monkeys, zebras, hyenas and antelopes with Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak providing a beautiful back drop. We arrive early mid-day and freshen up, followed by lunch and a short rest. You’ll later explore the Amboseli plains in an evening game drive.

Dinner & Overnight at Kibo Safari Camp

You will wake for early morning game drive and this early morning is one of the best times to see Mt Kilimanjaro. An early morning light reveals the Mountain Kilimanjaro turned into dark hue of purple and its snow into an ethereal pink and the sight of the mountain high above herds of elephants crossing the Amboseli plains is a timeless African image. You head back to the lodge for breakfast and later pack your bags and return to Nairobi.
