The Rongai route is less crowded compared to the Marangu route and is the easiest route of all. It has a relatively gentle gradient and short daily stages, winding its way from the starting point just south of the Kenya-Tanzania border through attractive farmland and delightful forest to several other climate zones.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, you will be met by our representative and taken to Keys hotel. This family-run hotel is located on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering comfortable accommodations, a variety of meals, a clean swimming pool, and friendly service. It is just a ten-minute walk to Moshi town center, providing a perfect blend of palatable meals and luxurious accommodations.

Rongai Gate (1,950 m/6,395 ft) to Simba Camp (2,800 m/9,186 ft)

After breakfast, you will be transferred by road (approximately a 3-4 hour drive) to the Rongai Gate in the north of Kilimanjaro National Park. A short, slow hike will take you through a pine tree plantation and into the thicker rainforest on the foothills of the mountain. Enjoy the natural surroundings, take photos, and have your packed lunch. Spend your first night at Simba Camp on the edge of the rainforest. Dinner and overnight at Simba Campsite (FB).
Simba Camp (3,450 m/11,319 ft) to Kikelewa Camp (3,600 m/11,811 ft)

Continue across the Kikelewa moorland towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Enjoy spectacular views of the Kenyan plains below. Spend the night at Kikelewa Camp. Dinner and overnight at Kikelewa Camp (FB).

Kikelewa Camp (3,600 m/11,811 ft) to Mawenzi Tarn hut (4,320 m/14,174 ft)

• Walking Time: 4-5 hours
• Altitude Gain: 720 m/2,363 ft
A steep but short hike leads you over grassy terrain to the base of Mawenzi Peak, offering spectacular views. The vegetation diminishes as you gain altitude towards the towering spires of Mawenzi Peak. Spend the night at Mawenzi Tarn hut next to a small lake. Dinner and overnight at Mawenzi Tarn hut (FB).
Mawenzi Tarn hut (4,320 m/14,174 ft) to Kibo Camp (4,700 m/15,419 ft)
• Walking Distance: 9 km/5.5 miles
• Walking Time: 5-6 hours
• Altitude Gain: 380 m/1,245 ft
After breakfast, pass through the lunar desert of Saddle, the lava-covered expanse between Kibo and Mawenzi. Progress is slow due to altitude. Spend the night at Kibo Camp. Rest early for the final ascent starting around midnight. Dinner and overnight at Kibo Camp (FB).
Kibo Camp (4,700 m/15,419 ft) to Summit via Gillman’s Point (5,685 m/18,651 ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m/19,340 ft) and descent to Horombo Hut (3,720 m/12,205 ft)
• Walking Distance: 23 km/14.3 miles descent
• Walking Time: 14-16 hours (Kibo - Gillman’s Point - Uhuru Peak – Horombo hut)
• Altitude Gain: 985 m/3,232 ft (Gillman’s Point), 210 m/689 ft (Uhuru Peak)
• Descent: 2,175 m/7,135 ft
Wake up early for a quick bite and set out in darkness for the steep, slow hike to Gillman’s Point. Enjoy the golden sunrise over Africa. From Gillman’s Point, hike about an hour to Uhuru Peak. Descend in high spirits to Horombo Hut. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut (FB).

Horombo Hut (3,720 m/12,205 ft) to Marangu Gate (1,843 m/6,046 ft)
• Walking Distance: About 20 km/12.4 miles
• Walking Time: 5-7 hours
• Descent: 1,877 m/6,159 ft
Enjoy a slow hike through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, taking in the lush vegetation and tree moss. Celebrate with a drink at Marangu Gate before transferring back to the hotel for a hot shower and rest (BB)

Best Time to Travel for a Tanzania Safari
The ideal time to visit Tanzania is during the Dry season, from late June to October, offering the best wildlife viewing opportunities. The wildebeest migration in the Serengeti typically occurs from July to September, while the calving season is from late January to February. The southern and western circuit parks are best visited during the Dry season (June to October), whereas the northern circuit parks can be enjoyed year-round.
